Dr. Deborah Birx Education

Dr. Birx acquired her secondary education at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. When Deborah and her siblings were still small children, they used a shed behind their family home as a makeshift lab for experiments in astronomy, geology, biology. The children also did experiments on one occasion, a homemade satellite dish antenna mounted on roller skates.

In Dr. Birx’s sophomore year, she won third place at the Lancaster City-County Science Fair.  She was, therefore featured in a front-page story in the Lancaster New Era with the subhead: Girls Sweep Top 3 Prizes. Dr. Birx told the Intelligencer Journal that, “Third is alright, but I’ll be back. I want that first prize.”

Dr. Birx’s completed her junior year of the International Science and Engineering Fair in San Diego. Her family later moved and she completed her secondary education at Carlisle High for her final year. In her senior year, she completed the Capital Area Science Fair and she received an award of the Grand Prize.

 Dr. Deborah’s brothers say that her experience competing in the fairs “really was part of encouraging her to go into science.” After completing her secondary learning, she joined Houghton College where she graduated in 1976 with a BS in chemistry. In 1980, Deborah graduated with a master’s degree in chemistry from the Hershey Medical Center, Pennsylvania State University.

From 1980-1994, Debora worked as an active duty reserve officer in the United States Army. From 1994 up to 2008, she served as an active duty regular army where she achieved the rank of Colonel.

From the year 1980- 1994, Deborah worked as a physician at the Walter Reed Medical Center. In 1981, she did and completed her internship in internal medicine. She also worked in Anthony Fauci’s lab where she completed two fellowships in clinical immunology, specializing in allergies and diagnostics.

From 1985-1989, Deborah served as the assistant chief of the Walter Reed Allergy and thereafter, she started her career as a clinician in immunology and later focused on HIV/AIDs vaccine research. From 1986-1989, Birx worked as an instigator at the National Institute of Health where she specialized in cellular immunology.
