Hellen Obiri joined the Kenya defense forces, where she trained as an Army in Eldoret Barracks and training grounds. She graduated in a colorful pass out in 2009, in March at Eldoret grounds in Kenya. After her pass out, Obiri dropped athletics for two years when she was posted at Laikipia Airbase. Hellen Obiri’s father Oburu loved athletics and forced his daughter to take it as a profession. “I summoned her from one of her netball teams, looked straight into her eyes, and instructed her to get back into athletics,” the father told Daily nation in an interview. Obiri accepted and started hard training with the aim of winning medals in the sport.  Currently, Hellen Obiri is a sergeant at KDF. In 2010, Obiri was forced by her father to compete in the 2010 Kenya Armed Forces Cross Country Championships and with an ultimatum of completing the race at all costs. She completed 32nd, although she was happy to have defeated 20 more candidates.  In 2011, she took part in some competition, and she was fifth, after some training.  Noah Ngenyi, once 2000m Olympic championship, advised Obiri to focus on middle distance races. Obiri made her debut in middle distance racing in 2011 at World Championship held in Daegu.  During the race, she set her personal best of 4:07:59 in the heats, although she failed to clinch the final race. This was as a result of poor training.  Her coach, Rick Simms, took up his role and engaged Obiri in training her with male athletes in 1500m in Nairobi, with one man running Infront and the other one at the back. She had no option but to harden and become a very strong challenger.
